Frederieke Richert joined the group as a PhD student. She will work on the NWO funded project The Role of the Activation Function in Feedforward Learning Systems (RAFFLES).

Simon Gazagnes defended his thesis Vast and Fast Data in the era of the large astrophysics and particle physics experiments and was awarded a cum laude distinction. The thesis project was supervised by Nasser Kalantar-Nayestanaki, Leon Koopmans, Johan Messchendorp and Michael Wilkinson.

Michele Mastropietro defended his thesis Numerical simulations of dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster and obtained a double PhD degree with the University of Ghent, Belgium. Promotors were Sven de Rijcke (Ghent), Reynier Peletier (Kapteyn) and Michael Biehl.

LVQ toolbox revised and new sklvq package' available:

The no-nonsense (GM)LVQ toolbox has been revised for matlab (R2021) by Roland Veen, see here.

Rick van Veen's sklearn compatible sklvq package is also documented in a recent (open access) publication: JMLR, vol. 22, issue 231, pp. 1-6.

Jiapan Guo joined the group as a tenure track assistant professor with an education profile. Her previous position was a post-doc researcher in medical image analysis from UMCG.

Godliver Owomugisha, former PhD student and winner of the Best UG Engineering Thesis Award 2021, launched the newly founded Artificial Intelligence & Interdisciplinary Research Group Busitema University, Uganda. Godliver leads the new group within the Faculty of Engineering and will continue to collaborate with the Intelligent Systems Group.

Michael Biehl has been awarded the title of Honorary Professor of Machine Learning at the Institute for Metabolism and Systems Research (ISMR) of the University of Birmingham/UK.

Michael Biehl gave an invited lecture and tutorial on Machine Learning in Medicine as part of the "Integrated Omics" Course in the joint "Data Science for Life Sciences" programme of Hanze University and UMCG.

Dr. Kerstin Bunte was awarded a prestigious NWO VIDI grant for her project 'Transparent AI.'
Brief description: Experts want to know how measurement data could provide information on natural processes that they are researching. Computer scientists can link the predictive power of artificial intelligence to the assertive power of models to create more transparency and insight. The new methods could lead to personally tailored medication and innovations in the smart industry.

The RUG Online Magazine published an article by Rene Fransen about our long standing collaboration with the Medical School at the University of Birmingham/UK: Smart algorithm improves diagnosis of adrenal tumours.

October 2020

External PhD student David Nebel defended his thesis Median Variants of Prototype Based Learning Vector Quantization: Methods for Classification of General Proximity Data. Prof. M. Biehl and Prof. T. Villmann (Hochschule Mittweida) were promotor and daily supervisor, respectively.

Dr. Godliver Owomugisha received a DSA Research Award from Data Science Africa for the project 'Early detection and diagnosis of crop diseases in asymptomatic plants: acquisition and machine learning analysis of spectral data'. This will enable us to continue our collaboration with Makerere University Kampala and the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) of Uganda.

Prof. Ole-Christoffer Granmo and Pål Grandal from the University of Agder, Norway, visited our group. Ole-Christoffer gave two talks in the colloquium of the Computer Science department.

Aleke Nolte has received the Best Poster Award at the NWO Symposium on Applied Computational Sciences (ACOS), in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, for the contribution Galaxy classification: a machine learning analysis of GAMA catalogue data.

Prof. Nicolai Petkov gave an invited plenary lecture at the International Conference on Computer Vision and Graphics ICCVG 2018 in Warsaw, Poland.

Our alumna Laura Fernandez Robles received the first prize for the best PhD thesis in the area of Computer Vision in Spain. Laura defended her thesis at the RUG in December 2016 and at the University in Leon in February 2017 and obtained the PhD degree from both universities. Congratulations with the first prize, Laura!

At the 30th IAC Winter School of Astrophysics, Tenerife/Spain, November 2018, Prof. Michael Biehl will give lectures and tutorials on 'Supervised Learning: Classification and Regression'.

Prof. Nicolai Petkov and Dr. Nicola Strisciuglio participated in and gave presentations at a project meeting of the H2020 project TrimBot2020 in Freiburg. A consortium of six universities and two companies aims to develop the first outdoor garden trimming robot.

Prof. M. Biehl, Dr. K. Bunte and Dr. M. Wilkinson participated in a meeting of the EU H2020 project Sundial in Heidelberg. The goal was to select three new PhD students for our group who will be paid by this project.

Prof. Michael Biehl gave an invited talk at the IAU Symposium 325 on Astroinformatics in Sorrento/Italy and another presentation at the University of Salerno/Italy.

Dr. George Azzopardi and Prof. Nicolai Petkov finalised the special issue of the journal Machine Vision and Applications (Springer) dedicated to CAIP 2015 and it went into printing production.

Our alumna Dr. Laura Fernandez Robles from the Univ. of Leon and Prof. Mario Cannataro from the Univ. of Catanzaro visited as Erasmus+ lecturers. Prof. Cannataro gave a talk in the Computer Science colloquium.

On September 21 we organised The 12th Int Workshop on Intelligent Systems in Allersmaborg, in association with a user meeting of the STW SmartBreed project. We had guests from the Universities of Wageningen, Catanzaro, Leon, Malta, Bangkok, and Hubei, as well as several companies involved in the SmartBreed project.

Prof. Nicolai Petkov followed an invitation to the Univ. of Cadiz to give a talk in the Intelligent Systems group of that university.

Dr. Kerstin Bunte joined our group as a Rosalind Franklin tenure track assistant professor. Her previous position was a Marie Curie fellow at the University of Birmingham. Kerstin's research is in machine learning with special attention to medical applications.

The third meeting of the Horizon 2020 project TrimBot took place at the University of Edinburgh (August 31 - September 1). Our group was represented by Prof. N. Petkov, Dr. N. Strisciuglio and M. Lopez Antequera. All three of us gave presentations.

Prof. Nicolai Petkov gave a key note lecture at the International Meeting "Challenges in Data Science" (July 8-11, Matera, Italy). Dr. Nicola Strisciuglio and Ahmad Alsahaf gave further presentations.

Prof. Nicolai Petkov gave a talk at the University Magna Grecia in Catanzaro, Italy and consolidated the recently signed Erasmus agreement.

Nicola Strisciuglio defended his PhD thesis with distinction on June 10. Prof. N. Petkov and Prof. M. Vento (Univ Salerno) were promotors, Dr G. Azzopardi (Univ Malta) was co-promotor. On this occasion, our group was visited by Prof. W.A. Halang, Prof. H. Unger and Dr. P. Sukjit (Univ. Hagen), Prof. C.N. Schizas (Univ. Cyprus), Prof. X. Jiang (Univ. Munster), Dr. L. The 11th Int Workshop on Intelligent Systems was organised by us in Allersmaborg, with 30 participants from the Universities of Salerno, Leon, Sevilla, Hagen, Muenster, Cyprus, KMUNB Bangkok, Hubei Minzu China, and Groningen.

TrimBot meeting: Our group hosted a two-days meeting of the EU H2020 TrimBot project in Groningen with 25 participants from the partner institutions (Univ. Edinburg, ETH Zurich, Univ Amsterdam, Univ Wageningen, Univ. Freiburg, ALUF, DLO, Bosch AG). Our group was represented by N. Petkov, N. Strisciuglio, M. Lopez Antequera and M. Wilkinson.

ITN SUNDIAL: A group of researchers from the Kapteyn Institute (project leader: R. Peletier) and from the Intelligent Systems group (M. Wilkinson, M. Biehl, K. Bunte) have been awarded an EU Innovative Training Network called SUNDIAL (SUrvey Network for Deep Imaging Analysis & Learning). The program is funded by EUR 3.7 million of which a EUR 1 million is assigned to the Groningen researchers.

Prof. Nicolai Petkov gave an invited talk and was invited visiting lecturer at the IT Faculty of the University of Malta.

Prof. Nicolai Petkov chaired an international committee for the PhD defence of Vincenzo Carletti at the Univ. of Salerno on April 21, concerning a double PhD degree from the Univ. of Salerno (IT) and the Univ. of Caen (FR).

Prof. Nicolai Petkov lectured at the University of Cyprus on an Erasmus+ teaching mission 4-8 April, 2016.

The kick-off meeting of the SmartBreed project funded by STW took place at our institute on March 3 and was attended by our partners Prof. Roel Veerkamp and Dr. Bart Ducro from Wageningen University and Dr. George Azzopardi from the Univ of Malta. Our group was represented by Ahmad Alsahaf and Prof. Nicolai Petkov.

Prof. Xiaoyi Jiang from the University of Muenster visited our group and the institute and gave a talk on 'Consensus prototype learning'.

Prof. Carlos Travieso from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria visited our group and the institute and gave a talk on 'Emotional detection for its use on biomedical systems'.

Prof. Enrico Grosso from the University of Sassari visited our group and the institute and gave a talk on 'Face analysis: from similarity to identity'.

Prof. Kenneth Camilleri from the University of Malta visited our group and the institute and gave a talk on 'Circle-Based Vectorisation (CBV): Vectorising Drawings having Shadow Cues'.

Laura Fernandez Robles defended her PhD thesis in Groningen on February 5, and in Leon on Feb 9, 2016. She obtained a double PhD degree, i.e. one degree from each of the two universities. The part of her work that concerns the use of content-based image retrieval in the fight against child pornography was covered by various media, see e.g. UK Universiteitskrant and Dagblad van het Noorden. On this occasion, our group was visited by Prof. Kenneth Camilleri from the University of Malta, Prof. Javier Gonzalez from the University of Malaga, Prof. Costas Pattichis from the University of Cyprus and Prof. Enrique Alegre Gutierrez from the University of Leon.

Ahmad Alsahaf started his PhD studies within the SmartBreed project, funded by STW. Ahmad received his MSc degree from the Politecnico di Milano in 2014.

Prof. Christos Schizas (Univ of Cyprus) visited our lab. He gave a talk in the CS colloquium and discussed with students various aspects of e-health.

The kick-off meeting of the EU Horizon2020 project Trimbot took place at the ETH Zurich. Our group was represented by Prof. N. Petkov, Dr. M. Wilkinson and M. Lopez Antequera.
