Biomimicry for the future of the energy system


Who I am and what I do:

Hi, I’m Giuliano Andrea Pagani and my research explores Smart Grids through the lenses of Complex Systems and Networks to examine possible evolutions of the power grid. My list of publications as a PhD student at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, focuses on smart grid and energy systems.


The future of energy:

Now I have realized that for the system to be Smart, an improvement, or evolution is required. What’s better than looking at the natural world with its 4 billions years of evolutions, adaptations and optimizations? Taking inspiration from nature to improve or to realize new solutions for mankind is the essence of biomimicry, also know as biomimetics.


What I look for:

The idea of an energy system optimized and driven by the same principles of evolution that have driven nature is an intriguing new field of research. I welcome opportunities to collaborate, brainstorm, discuss and look for funding opportunities for energy biomimicry.


Results so far:

Together with Dr. K. Honey, we had some initial thoughts and discussions during the Santa Fe Institute Complex System Summer School 2013. Our initial concept ideas emerged in a position paper concerning biomimicry and energy. I believe that the area of complex evolving system together with biomimetics are key areas of investigation to study the current and propose the future energy system.
