Observation for Design

Abstract:

The research community's awareness of the complexity of the problem of designing enjoyable interfaces is growing. In response, variations in metrics and methodologies are being developed within the well known approaches such as task centered design, participatory design, and user studies. As part of this movement to develop more methods of bringing the human into the design loop, we are currently focusing on what we observe and how we use those observations. Thus, we use qualitative observational to better inform design. This approach will be illustrated with both examples of our observational research and with the resulting interactive software.
