Path Openings and other ``Flexible'' Structuring Elements

In the previous section, we discussed that the S.E. can be made to vary across the image, based either on position or on grey level. In this section we discuss a series of methods in which the image content itself steers the shape of the structuring element. Path openings [4,8], amoeba filters [5], and morphological PDE methods belong to this class. As an application, we show how these operators can be used for detecting thin, tube-like or plane-like structures in 2D and 3D with state-of-the-art results.
