In the previous section, we discussed that the S.E. can be made to
vary across the image, based either on position or on grey level. In
this section we discuss a series of methods in which the image content
itself steers the shape of the structuring element. Path openings
[4,8], amoeba filters
[5], and morphological PDE methods belong to this class.
As an application, we show how these operators can be used for detecting
thin, tube-like or plane-like structures in 2D and 3D with state-of-the-art
results.
